With about 10 years in total across 2 departments, my wife and I both won the Chiefs Award for Excellence. Myself as a firefighter and my wife as the EMS officer and firefighter. We had the honor of being given our own rescue vehicle as we were the number 2 and 3 responders behind the chief for multiple years in a row.
The most rewarding part was being able to meet the entire community and feel like we were giving back in some way. The worst part is getting that call when you have to watch a neighbor or friend pass which did happen.
Overall, there was nothing better than working in and for your community at the local fire department. The teamwork and trust you need to learn and use could save lives including your own. A great lesson when working at any company.

As a City Council Person, I was part of several committees including budget, fire-wise and the committee on the new dispensary laws in Washington state. Being part of the budget committee, I had the honor or signing all the checks for the city employees and working on balancing the budget (for the first time in ten years) while still providing new SCBA gear for the Roslyn Fire Department.
